A standard Elvis movie is “Flaming Star”. It was released in 1960 and tells the story of the Pacer Burton. Pacer is half Indian, half white. He has a brother named Clint and the story is based in Texas. However, travel starts when his mother’s people start attacking and raiding the white settlers that have invaded their territory. Pacer is not sure which side to take as he is both Indian and white. As in all of Presley’s films, “Pacer” has a woman he falls in love with called Roslyn Pierce. Roslyn is played by actress Barbara Eden.
“Flaming Star” is based on a novel by Clair Huffaker, entitled “Flaming Lance”. It took the producers, Twentieth Century Fox, two years to decide who to cast in the leading role of “Pacer”. The film was not quite as successful as it was hoped it would be – it only hit number 12 on the box office list. However, critics were impressed with his acting and many critics thought he was quite believable in this role.
Presley sang some of his most memorable songs during “Flaming Star”. “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” and “It’s Now or Never” were two of the biggest hits to make it to the movie’s soundtrack. This is one of the few of Presley’s movies in which only a small number of songs are included in the film. Presley had requested that two of the songs be removed. However, anniversary editions of this movie are released with these two extra songs.
